This is a list of the 565 municipalities in the U.S. state of New Jersey, ordered by population. There are five types of municipality in the state â" boroughs (250), cities (52), towns (15), townships (245), and villages (3). New Jersey, the fourth-smallest state, covers 8,722 square miles (22,590Â km2), meaning the average land size of a municipality in the state is about 15 square miles (39Â km2) â" but note the wide range of actual sizes in the map at right.
